FAQs

What happens at a typical session with horses?
We spend time helping you practice becoming more horselike! This means focusing your attention on your body, its sensations and feelings, and opening yourself to its wisdom and messages for you. Horses communicate through these inner sensations and feelings. Learn how to meet them there.

Why are horses good with vets in transition?
Think about it. Most horses pass from one human to another. Some are patient and forgiving, others are rigorous and demanding, others are cruel, others are ignorant. A horse’s life is like twenty years in foster care, or in and out of prison, or returning to civilian life after years away in the service. They must change locations over and over, often discovering that the other horses already have their own social groups, and what was learned at the old location hasn’t much application in the new one. Besides this, they must learn to understand and fit into the successive communities of horses and people they meet along the way. In short — They’ve been through what you are going through.

Do we need prior experience with horses?
No prior experience is necessary. You’ll be led through a series of safe, fun exercises that prepare you for your own time with a horse.

What happens if a horse gets wild and does something unpredictable?
Our horses are calm and accustomed to being around people. At the same time, they are horses! We have safety protocols in place; we will be with you. You’ll be trained on how to remain safe regardless of what happens.

How do we best prepare for our time with horses?
We will send you a pre-session questionnaire to complete; this gives us a sense of what experience, if any, you bring to the session. Other than this, come with an open, curious mind and expect to have a wonderful time.

But I’m afraid of horses; they’re so big and powerful. Is it OK to be afraid?
Most people show up with a fair amount of fear! Even those who have been through tough duty stations. It is perfectly OK. Our training helps you reduce the fear and replace it with curiosity and wonder. All the horse wants is for you to be honest with your feelings. If you feel fear while with a horse, let the horse know this is how you feel. You’ll likely find that your fear disappears once you do this! And the horse, sensing your honesty, will be drawn to you.

What do we wear?
Dress in layers and be sure to wear closed toe shoes. This is a working horse ranch, so wear clothes you can get dirty in. We will send out specific clothing suggestions, based on current weather, a few days before your session.

What kind of learning and discovery can we expect?
The horses are especially good with people who are in life transitions. We will help you get clear about your own intentions and desires prior to meeting your horse. We encourage you to communicate with your horse, i.e., share what you’re thinking and feeling more than you might otherwise do. They will sense what you’re up against and offer their horse.

What kinds of learning do others report? Some examples of others’ learning include:

  • How to relax and be at peace with a horse
  • How to be more authentic and real with employers
  • How to hold your ground and move with grace and ease
  • How to speak your truth when it may not be easy
  • How to be in right relationship with yourself and your body so that you can hear your own wisdom and guidance
  • How to let go of various concerns and worries, breathe more deeply and simply show up in the moment you’re in… with no expectations other than to be present to your life as it is now
  • Greater openness and courage to face areas of uncertainty in your life with clarity and confidence
